Knight Center grad lands job as environmental communications director
Michigan State University Knight Center graduate Haley Walker recently landed a job as the communications manager of The Freshwater Trust in Portland, Oregon.
The Freshwater Trust is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that actively works to preserve and restore the country’s freshwater ecosystems. The group builds, locally implements and scales game-changing tools that help achieve freshwater health.
Her new employer said her experience as a journalist with an advanced journalism degree was a major reason for her hire. Explaining complex conservation solutions to wide audiences is a critical skill she’ll use in her new role.
Since completing her master’s degree in December of 2010, Walker has worked as a writer and brand leader for the national nonprofit Environment America and its 29 state-based affiliates in Boston, Massachusetts. She has also been published in OnEarth Magazine and The Ecologist.
While at MSU Walker was a Knight Center graduate assistant, the president of the Environmental Journalism Student Association and reported these stories for Great Lakes Echo.
