Knight Center awards new documentary grants

The Knight Center for Environmental Journalism has selected three 2016 documentary-making projects for $3,500 grants to MSU faculty-student teams.
These are the winning proposals:

  • “Vaults of Heaven: Competing in the EPA RainWorks Challenge” The film will document how an MSU student planning and design team created its entry for the 2015 EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge, using the new MSU Medical Campus in Grand Rapids. Faculty: Jon Burley, School of Planning, Design & Construction. Students: Na Li and Xumei Wang, School of Planning, Design & Construction.
  • “Food Stories Project: Crafting of Ricing Moccasins.” Wild rice (manoomin) is sacred to the Anishinabek, and the animation project will document the traditional making of wild ricing moccasins. Faculty: Serena Carpenter, School of Journalism. Student: Sage Miller, Department of Media & Information. Consultant Barbara Barton.
  • “Living at the Edge of Climate Change: Lessons from Tanzanians Who Are Coping.” The documentary will tell stories of how people in Tanzania are coping with the leading edge of climate change and how farmers and herders are adapting to a new reality. Sue Carter, School of Journalism, and Jennifer Olsen, Department of Media & Information. Student: John Lavaccare, School of Journalism. Editor: Kirk Mason, alum.

In addition to public dissemination of the projects, the Knight Center will be able to use them on its website and for presentation in classes, workshops and other center activities.
This is the second year of the center’s campuswide grant competition. The proposals were selected after a university-wide open competition.

An eighth grader from New York created an award-winning documentary about Rachel Carson with a bit of help from Michigan State University’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism.
Nicole Chiang, a student entering Guilderland High School in Albany County this fall, became interested in the adverse effects of pesticides when she volunteered at the Farnsworth Middle School Pine Bush Butterfly Station. Last summer there weren’t any butterflies at the station, although there were plenty in previous years, she said.

Poulson recognized for decades of Great Lakes environmental journalism

Knight Center Senior Associate Director David Poulson was recognized by the International Association of Great Lakes Research for important and sustained efforts to inform the public and policymakers on Great Lakes issues.


BURLINGTON, Vt. – The International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) has recognized David Poulson, the senior associate director of Michigan State University’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism, for a career-long dedication to inform and educate the public and policymakers on Great Lakes issues.
Poulson, a 1982 graduate of MSU’s School of Journalism, is also editor of Great Lakes Echo, the Knight Center’s award-winning regional online environmental news service.
The IAGLR board of directors recognized him with the John R. (Jack) Vallentyne award given for contributing substantially to education and outreach in the Great Lakes community for at least 20 years and with an impact beyond the awardee’s local community.

Knight Center students earn top honors

Eleven students affiliated with the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism are among the award winners recognized recently by Michigan State University’s School of Journalism.
They include:

  • Chelsea Mongeau, Edward J. Meeman award for outstanding undergraduate student in environmental journalism
  • Perry Parks, Rachel Carson award for outstanding graduate student in environmental journalism and also recognized as outstanding doctoral student
  • Danielle Woodward, Knight Center Service Award and also a National Pulliam Journalism Fellowship
  • Amelia Havanec, co-winner of the Len Barnes Scholarship and a Mary Adelaide Gardner Scholarship
  • Colleen Otte, co-winner of the Len Barnes Scholarship and a Mary Adelaide Gardner Scholarship
  • Kevin Duffy, co-winner of the Don Caldwell Memorial Scholarship
  • Amanda Proscia, co-winner of the Outstanding Masters Student award and co-winner of the Don Caldwell Memorial Scholarship
  • Jenna Chapman, winner of the Larry Lee Overseas Study Scholarship
  • Nyla Hughes, winner of the Michael A. and Sandra S. Clark Scholarship
  • Collin Krizmanich, winner of the Donald F. & Katherine K. Dahlstrom Scholarship
  • Carie Cunningham, winner of the Mickie L. Edwardson Endowed Scholarship
