Poulson reports on African academic innovation project

Chiku Mtegha, a researcher at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture an Natural Resources, explains to African journalists research into using chemicals from local plants to deworm goats.

Knight Center Senior Associate Director David Poulson contributed to a recent article on building the capacity of academics to do relevant research at African universities.

“How design thinking united researchers and farmers” appears in the African edition of The Conversation.

It reports on a strategy that encourages academics to create, develop and implement their own research agendas to more directly address the needs of people. Continue reading

Knight Center supported documentary nominated for Emmy Award

A Knight Center funded documentary film, “Sh*t Saves the world”, is nominated for an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Michigan Chapter.

The nomination is for the film trailer.

Director Troy Hale, Producer/Editor Zoe Kissel, and Producer Geri Alumit Zeldes will attend the award ceremony June 15th.  The film is a humor and informational, look into impact of people our planet.  The project brings to light subjects that are not often discussed… at least not at the dinner table.  Adding an element of humor allows the film to have a wider audience interest, than a traditional environmental documentary.

Knight Center research director wins book award

Knight Center research director Bruno Takahashi’s edited book News Media Coverage of Environmental Challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean has been selected as the winner of the 2019 Knudson Latin America Prize.

The prize is awarded by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) to a book or project concerning Latin America or coverage of issues in Latin America.

The book was published by Palgrave in September 2018 and was co-edited with Dr. Manuel Chavez, associate professor at MSU and Knight Center affiliated faculty, Dr. Juliet Pinto, associate professor at Pennsylvania State University, and Dr. Mercedes Vigon, associate professor at Florida International University. Knight Center director talks about fake news

Knight Center director Eric Freedman recently gave two long-distance guest lectures on fake news to journalism students and faculty at universities in Kazakhstan.

Hosting the lectures were Hodja Ahmed Yassawi Kazakh-Turkish International University in Turkistan and Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan State University in Ust-Kamenogorsk

Freedman’s lectures addressed the growing prevalence of fake news, misinformation and manipulation that is fueled by social media and threatens democratization, citizen trust in the press and transparency. Continue reading
